Spark plug is one of the most important parts of any car, if it is in good condition the car engine will run smoother and will return higher fuel economy, but if it has a problem your car will not run softly and the economy will also not be that good. The engine will misfire or hesitate on acceleration.
Now the thing is how well you know your car and the problems that might come up. First of all you need to know what a normal spark plug looks like and what its condition should be. A “normal” plug should have brown to greyish tan colour with the electrode slightly worn off. It will have correct operating condition and the heat range for the engine is right. It is highly recommended that whenever you change the spark plugs; replace them with ones having the same heat range.
Now the condition of a problematic spark plug will be easily identified as you know how a normal one should look like. There is a condition called “Carbon Deposits” where the plugs have dry sooty deposits on them which indicates there might be rich mixture or the ignition is weak. It causes the engine hard starts or misfires and hesitates. The recommendation is to check for a clogged air cleaner, sticky choke, high float level and worn ignition points. The use of a longer core nose spark plug would give greater anti-fouling protection.
Another condition is known as “Ash Deposits” which means that there will be light brown deposits gathered on the sides or the centre of the electrodes or it can be both. These deposits are derived from the fuel or/and oil additives, and the excessive amount may cover the spark which ultimately cause hesitation and misfiring during the acceleration. If you are facing any of these symptoms, it is recommended to install new valve guide seals if the deposits accumulate over low tesla coil kit mileage or short time, it will prevent the seepage of oil into the combustion chambers and also try to change the fuel brands.
“Oil Deposits” is another condition which indicates the plugs need attention. In this condition there might be oil coating which is caused by poor oil control. The oil must have leaked into the combustion chamber past the worn valve guides or possibly piston rings, causing hard starting, misfiring and hesitation. To fix this mechanical condition, it is recommended that you get the necessary repairs or install new plugs.
The other condition you might see is the plug being “Over Heated” where the white insulator gets blisters, electrode gets worn and the deposits disappear, which results in shortening plug life. It is recommended under these conditions to have the plugs checked for correct heat range, over-advance ignition timing, intake manifold vacuum leaks and sticking valve and lean fuel mixture. Recommendations are to make sure the radiator is not clogged and the coolant level is correct.
The plug is “Worn” if the electrodes are rounded but of normal colour and have small amount of deposits on the firing end. If the said condition is true, you may face hard starting in cold or damp weather and the economy will also be poor. The recommendation to fix this problem is simply replace the plugs with the new ones of the same heat range.
